Today, I’m going to talk about one of the most renowned TOM FORD eye shadow palette on the market, Cognac Sable. If you google cognac sable, you might find hundreds of posts and reviews. I only got this palette recently because, first, Tom Ford beauty is only present on the Dutch market for a few months; second, I heard that this palette is about to discontinue.
I am not sure whether this rumor is true, but this palette is no longer featured on Tom ford beauty website. So It seems to be discontinued. This review may help you decide whether you want to catch the last train of Cognac Sable.

What is it?
Tom Ford Cognac Sable
Who is it for?
I must say that this is not a palette for you if you just begin to wear makeup or if you want to create a subtle day look with the palette. The shimmery and glittery components will scare you off.
On the other hand, this is an awesome palette if you want to create an evening look or if you just feel like wearing the shimmery color during the day (like me!)
Color and Texture ?
The palette contains 3 shimmery colors and 1 glittery color. The texture of these 4 shades vary. The simmery colors in this palette are not your normal shimmer. I used the palette for 2 weeks straight, and got used to this strong look. This Saturday, I switched to the Chanel illusion D’Ombre cream eyeshadow (Ebouli) which is also a shimmery color. Until then I realized that the Cognac Sable does give a much stronger and reflective look. But it is chic shimmer/glitter for sure ;-).
Upper Left: a shimmery beige color. The texture of this color is different than the other 2 shimmery colors, in my opinion. Once applied on my eyelid, it becomes cakey, and really does not look so good. I do have a darker and more yellow skin tone than this color. So I think this might look quite good on someone with paler skin undertone.
Lower Left: a shimmery brownish color. I really like this color. The texture is so fine and it blends very well with the color in the lower right.
Lower Right: a shimmery deep dark grey color with a hue of purple. This is actually my favorite color in the palette. You can create a strong smokey eye with this color alone.
Upper Right: a glittery orange color. This color is, unlike the other 3 colors, prone to fall out. It is an unbelievably nice color, though. You can easily pat the color on the lid. Put multiple layers on and/or use more densed eyeshadow brush to create a intense look.

How to use it?
You can create multiple looks by using just 1 color, or multiple colors at the same time.
The small brushes that come with it are fine to use if you do not want to invest in brushes or if you are on the go. Usually I do recommend to invest in eyeshadow brushes (because you need tools that fit your eyelid and great tools help you achieve great results. This is also the case here. I do notice a significant difference in results when I apply it using the eye shadow brushes and the brushes from the quad.
What I like about it? (or what i like most about it?)
You can easily achieve a great look with the palette and the color combination of this palette is amazing. The texture is so nice that the colors really blend themselves. I know it is a cliche to say the product blends themselves, but this palette is really fool-proof.
Previously, every time I read a review on TOM FORD eye palette, people say the product blends themselves. I always think it is melodramatic and exaggerating and thik how can that be possible? But you won’t know until you try it, ladies!
This look is created by using all 4 colors on my friend (under flash light). The whole eye look only took me 3 minutes.
What I don’t like about it?
Well, I don’t like the upper left color in the quad. Maybe it just doesn’t suit me.
This eyeshadow does tend to fall out. I barely have no fallout of any eyeshadow quad from this palette. This means that you need to apply the shadow first and then put on sunscreen and foundations on your skin. Otherwise, the fallout of the eyeshadow will forces you to remove your skincare and foundation and apply it again.
75 euros for 10 grams (Ouch!) I think we tend to only focus on price when we talk about makeups, but forget about the quantity. The Charlotte Tilbury color-coded eyeshadow quad is 50 euros for 5 grams, and the Chanel LES 4 OMBRES eyeshadow quad is 52 euro for 2 grams.
TOM FORD seems to be really pricey compared to other luxury brands but if you look at the quantity, it offers great price/quantity ratio.
So if you really enjoy the color combination of a specific TOM FORD palette and you will probably use it a lot, it is TOTALLY worth the investment.
What does the product claim?
The centerpiece of the tom ford color collection. Each eye color quad is designed with four opulent complementing shades that achieve multiple looks, from a bold, smokey eye, to a sexy splash of color and everything between.
Formulated with advanced color processes, the four luxurious finishes – sheer sparkle, satin, shimmer and matte – offer a spectrum of intensity and effects and deliver incredible shade fidelity and outstanding adhesion.
Does the product live up to the claim?
I guess so. You can really create multiple looks by using 1-4 colors at the same time. It definitely gives you a range from bold smokey eye to a sexy orange splash of color, everything but a subtle look.
Where to buy?
In Netherlands,, It is only available in de Bijenkorf in Amsterdam. If you lucky enough to live in a country that carries the TOM FORD beauty range, go to the counter and check it out. If you are not in such situation, I think Selfridges do ship worldwide.
If you want this palette, you do need to try to track it down though. There is not so much left.
Would I buy it again?
Yes and No. I certainly do not need to repurchase this one, since this one will last me about 10 years. On the other hand, I am on my mission to get other palettes, and also try to find a TOM FORD palette suitable for wedding makeup for my friends 😉
